CLASS OUTLINE - JUDY'S MAPLE LEAF This class outline may be used by teachers who wish to teach a project using The Creative Pattern Book by Judy Martin. Individuals seeking guidance for self instruction are also welcome to use this outline. I recommend beginning each class with a preview to ensure that students will come to the first work session properly prepared. Feel free to tailor this outline to your own teaching style. I divide each project into sessions. Sessions can be planned for consecutive weeks or all sessions can be presented in a single all-day workshop. The outline indicates where you can find additional lessons and details in the book or on this web site. Class Description: Judy’s Maple Leaf is a contemporary variation of the traditional Maple Leaf pattern. It was designed as the cover quilt for Judy Martin’s Creative Pattern Book. It shows off batiks and hand-dyed marbled fabrics beautifully. The asymmetrical Grand Block is easy to make and provides fun opportunities for Piece ‘n’ Play. Just make the blocks, then play with the way you turn them before you stitch them into rows. Piece ‘n’ Play adds an element of surprise and lets you make a truly one-of-a-kind quilt that is easy and loads of fun. The stem can be pieced, appliqued, or left off entirely, according to your wishes. The pattern is presented in twin size, but it can be easily enlarged to queen size. One or two blocks and a border make an attractive wall quilt. Level: Beginners and beyond. This pattern is perfect for all quilters Supply List: The Creative Pattern Book by Judy Martin Rotary cutter Rotary ruler Point Trimmer (optional; available from this web site) Shapemaker 45 (optional; available from this web site) Cutting mat Sewing machine Thread Straight pins Thread snips Seam ripper (optional; you know if you need one) Extension cord Yardage, fat quarters, or scraps for your chosen size, as listed in The Creative Pattern Book SESSION ONE: Preview Demonstration: Show the classroom sample as well as the book version Discussion: Style and color choices (p. 127) Hands on: Assist with fabric selection Homework: Choose and prepare fabrics (p. 126) SESSION TWO: Leaves Discussion: Cutting lengthwise strips (p. 25), trimming points (p. 27), piecing or applique options for stem (p. 128) Demonstration: Rotary cutting squares (p. 16) Rotary cutting applique stem strips (p. 16) Rotary cutting ½ square triangles (p. 16) Rotary cutting half trapezoids (p. 18) Rotary cutting pieced stem prisms G (p. 128) Hands on: Cut patches for leaves and borders (pp. 128, 131) Demonstration: Piecing the stem unit (p. 128) Appliqueing the stem unit (p. 128) Hands on: Make stem units Demonstration: Making the leaf (p. 131) Hands on: Make leaves Homework: Complete leaves SESSION THREE: Judy’s Maple Leaf Grand Blocks Demonstration: Rotary cutting rectangles (p. 16) Hands on: Cut D and E patches for Grand Block Demonstration: Piecing the Judy’s Maple Leaf Grand Block (p. 131) Hands on: Piecing the Grand Block Homework: Complete the Grand Blocks SESSION FOUR: Piece ‘n’ Play, Borders Demonstration: Arranging blocks in rows, turning them different ways Hands on: Arrange blocks in rows Demonstration: Piecing the Border Unit Z (p. 131) Hands on: Piece Z Units for border Discussion: Making pieced borders from Z units Homework: Make and attach borders SESSION FIVE: Quilting and Finishing Demonstration/discussion: Quilting options (p. 132), marking, basting, quilting, binding (p. 33) and finishing
